01 — The Challenge A Deck That Had Seen Better Days — and a Backyard That Deserved Better
The homeowners had a large, wooded lot but an outdoor space that wasn't keeping up with how they wanted to live: an aging wooden deck with no shade, no kitchen, and no real reason to stay outside. They wanted a covered outdoor room usable in the rain and into cooler evenings, a full outdoor kitchen for grilling and entertaining, a bar where guests could gather, and a patio large enough for a crowd — all set against their wooded backdrop. Scale and proportion mattered: they didn't want anything cramped or out of proportion with the home, and they wanted the result to feel like it was intentionally designed.
02 — Our Approach Three Outdoor Rooms, One Seamless Experience
The design treats the backyard like a well-planned interior floor plan — distinct zones for lounging, dining, and cooking, connected to flow naturally. The white painted pavilion was matched to the home's exterior; the stone bar picks up the natural materials while the dark granite top adds contrast. Three zones flow outward from the home: the Pavilion Lounge with a sectional, ceiling-mounted infrared heater, and café lights; the Outdoor Kitchen with grill, fridge, storage, and sink along the house; and the Dining Terrace — an open paver zone with a dining table under string lights. The stone bar bridges the lounge and kitchen without creating a visual wall.
03 — The Transformation The Backyard They Never Had — and Now Can't Imagine Living Without
The result was an outdoor space that was built for entertaining and could be enjoyed nearly year round. The gabled pavilion is a true outdoor living room — protected from rain, warmed by infrared heaters, built for long evenings on the sectional. The full outdoor kitchen allows dinner parties to begin and end outside without anyone needing to head back in. The stone bar bridges the lounge and kitchen as the natural social gathering point, and the dining terrace under café lights is perfect for entertaining large groups.
