01 — The Challenge A High-End Home with an Underwhelming Backyard
The homeowners had a shingle-style home in Devon that made a strong impression from the street — but the backyard needed some upgrading. The existing pool area was plain concrete with standard aluminum fencing and no design continuity, and the front landscaping was similarly underdeveloped. They wanted a complete rethinking of both, front and back, with a modern aesthetic that felt intentional in every detail: privacy from the street without a standard fence, shade over the pool area, a lounge for entertaining, a pass-through window bar, a putting green, and landscape lighting designed for nighttime impact. Their main concern was finding a team that could execute contemporary design language in an outdoor setting without it feeling out of place on a Main Line property.
02 — Our Approach Modern Design Language Meets Main Line Living
The design concept was architectural — materials and forms that feel more like interior design brought outdoors. The signature element is a custom stone lattice privacy wall: a woven breeze-block pattern set between stone columns that provides privacy and visual texture without reading as a fence. A retractable canopy on a cable system spans from the wall to the house, creating adjustable shade over the pool deck. The pergola lounge features a pass-through window bar with stools that opens directly from the pool house interior; stepping stones set in an artificial turf grid replaced the old concrete; a putting green was tucked into a wooded corner; and the front yard was redesigned with a new paver walkway, circular medallion, and foundation plantings wrapping the home. Low-voltage lighting keeps the pathways and pool area both functional and stunningly beautiful after dark.
03 — The Transformation Built for Daytime. Designed for After Dark.
The pass-through window bar is the social centerpiece — drinks and food served directly from inside to stools along the patio. The retractable canopy gives on-demand shade over the pool deck, and the pergola lounge with modern fire pit was designed as the evening gathering spot. But the space was conceived with nighttime in mind as much as daytime: the landscape lighting illuminates the surrounding landscape, turning the backyard after dark into the property's most dramatic view.
